I don't care about the rumors

Here's one of my dirty little secrets that as an Apple blogger I shouldn't reveal: I don't care about Apple rumors. Shocking, I know.

Sure, I cover them from time to time here on TUAW but I don't read ThinkSecret or MacOSRumors and I am not working on creating a network of highly placed moles in Cupertino so that all of Apple's secrets will be known to me.

Part of the fun of following Apple is that you never know what they are going to do next (though you can generally figure it out if you are paying attention).  I like to be surprised by their announcements, and I for one hope that we are all wrong about whatever it is Apple will be revealing on Tuesday.

Am I the only Mac geek out there that feels this way?

Here's a good reason to not bother with rumor sites: there must be a better way to spend your time. Go to the park or draw a picture or read a book or something. Almost anything is more worthwhile than random speculation about a known secretive company, especially when the speculation always always turns out to be completely off-base.

And please, please no more blurry product photos. You know why they're blurry? For the same reason photos of Bigfoot and UFOs are blurry.

My primary motivation for watching the rumors is to get a leg up. Whenever I am fairly certain a new product is coming out, I sell my old one on eBay just before the announcement. This way, I get the maximum for my previous gear to put toward the new one. Sometimes I get burned when my research-based forecast doesn't pan out. Usually, it works out quite well.

I love reading about the rumors, and keeping tabs on who had what right, who was no where close. I usually can't wait until the day that Apple announces what is coming next. I feel like a kid waiting for Christmas to finally get here. So, I guess that makes me one who really does not want to know in advance.

Excellent! I agree completely. Some people have centered their lives around technology (and Apple in particular) and have a lot invested in peddling rumors. If their site doesn't get traffic, all of a sudden they're not important anymore. It's sad, honestly.

You don't read Thinksecret? Right.

But I agree the faked new product spy shots (in all their absurd bluriness) are the product of folks with too much time on their hands and too few interestes outside of technology.

Given how wrong the rumor sites usually are, I've stopped bothering to read them much. Did you ever notice how they never say "oops! We were wrong!" but instead just get all quiet for a while?

Tim...I've run into the same thing so I just try not to upgrade in the weeks before Macworld or WWDC.

As for the iPod, we're passed due for an update. I mean the current generation is over 8-weeks old.

As much as I lust for a widescreen touchscreen iPod 6G, from a marketing perspective, it's not possible for Apple to launch a true video iPod barely half a year since the 5G. The proximity of the nano and 5G launch make sense, because they are parallel product lines, but I doubt Apple has milked the 5G line enough for it to be killed.
