I don't care about the rumors
Here's one of my dirty little secrets that as an Apple blogger I shouldn't reveal: I don't care about Apple rumors. Shocking, I know.Sure, I cover them from time to time here on TUAW but I don't read ThinkSecret or MacOSRumors and I am not working on creating a network of highly placed moles in Cupertino so that all of Apple's secrets will be known to me.
Part of the fun of following Apple is that you never know what they are going to do next (though you can generally figure it out if you are paying attention). I like to be surprised by their announcements, and I for one hope that we are all wrong about whatever it is Apple will be revealing on Tuesday.
Am I the only Mac geek out there that feels this way?

Rumours can be fun to read, especially when you compare them later on to what actually came about. But yes, part of the fun of being a Mac user is that Apple tends to be very good at blindsiding all of us. I think a lot of people take them too seriously though, get too riled up when people post them. Who cares? It's all in good fun.
Though no, Scott, I don't hope you're all wrong. Cause I'd love to see a better Video iPod or a Tablet Mac or a Mac mini Media Center. Or a Jetsons Car. Though the iSuck would definitely take the cake...

I feel the exact same way, It wouldnt be as much fun if we knew what was coming out. And I will take rumors as RUMORS only nothing more.

Couldn't agree more. I find the constant mental masturbation of my own community when it comes to rumors really offputting.

I'm with you, Scott. Speculation can be fun I suppose, but what's the point? Really? What is the point of knowing what Apple is going to release before they release it? What was the point of finding your presents in Daddy's closet before yer birthday? Kinda takes all the fun out of the Big Day. So, you were either disappointed or had lost all enthusiasm. It's a killjoy either way.

You're not alone. Great post! If people would dedicate all the time they put into fake photos into something more constructive the Mac community would only benefit.

I agree with you. Well, to a point. Computer users need to know if/when it is a good time to upgrade, and Apple does not help its own customers with all the secrecy. I know a few Mac people over the years who simply gave up on Apple because they were tired of being burned by Apple by buying a new machine only to see it replaced a week later.

Speculation is one thing - an obsession that includes faked invites is scary...

Rumors are fun, but that's it. Reading them (or at least, having heard about them) is one thing, but following or believing is another story. Actually, i think quite the same as you : i really get excited when comes the time of the keynote. All the rumors before are just filling the void, just like flies before supper... You watch them fly, but you dont eat them :) (ok ok my image is a little strange)

I do look at mac rumours from a variety of places during my normal net activities, but I treat them like politicians - completely untrustowrthy. And even when the announcements are made and they recap, they - once again like politicians - stake claim to have, at one point or another, predicted that what was introduced, was already known. This was the case with one website who said they predicted the MacBook Pro over 3 months in advance. So while the rumour sites are (sometimes) a good read, I treat most of what is on there as bull plop.

I enjoy 'real' rumors where we speculate what Apple will introduce based on other products and market trends. I don't like it when someone leaks actual specs from apple or a manufacturing partner.

As much as I lust for a widescreen touchscreen iPod 6G, from a marketing perspective, it's not possible for Apple to launch a true video iPod barely half a year since the 5G. The proximity of the nano and 5G launch make sense, because they are parallel product lines, but I doubt Apple has milked the 5G line enough for it to be killed.

Given how wrong the rumor sites usually are, I've stopped bothering to read them much. Did you ever notice how they never say "oops! We were wrong!" but instead just get all quiet for a while?
Tim...I've run into the same thing so I just try not to upgrade in the weeks before Macworld or WWDC.
As for the iPod, we're passed due for an update. I mean the current generation is over 8-weeks old.

You don't read Thinksecret? Right.
But I agree the faked new product spy shots (in all their absurd bluriness) are the product of folks with too much time on their hands and too few interestes outside of technology.

Excellent! I agree completely. Some people have centered their lives around technology (and Apple in particular) and have a lot invested in peddling rumors. If their site doesn't get traffic, all of a sudden they're not important anymore. It's sad, honestly.

I love reading about the rumors, and keeping tabs on who had what right, who was no where close. I usually can't wait until the day that Apple announces what is coming next. I feel like a kid waiting for Christmas to finally get here. So, I guess that makes me one who really does not want to know in advance.
