Happy Birthday, Apple

Fast forward to April 1, 2008, Apple has now surpassed 32 years of making wonderful products that capture the imagination of everyone. Their products have almost a "magical" feel to them. iPods, iMacs, Mac OS X; Apple certainly has come a long way since 1976.
Here's to wishing Apple a happy 32nd Birthday ... we certainly can't wait to see what the next 32 years bring.
Do you have a story about Apple's early days? Be sure to tell yours in the comments.

I thought it was pretty much (finally) settled history that only one of the Steve's invented the Apple 8-bit computer. Alone. Albeit with on of the greatest marketing geniuses of all time standing right next to him in that garage.

I've been using Apple since the Apple ][+... and I vividly remember when the Mac was announced. I rushed out and got a brochure on the Mac, with it's cutaway ad of a tennis shoe, 3D glory and all...
At the time I had an Apple //e enhanced!... and I called Computerland where they would take in trades... told the sales guy that i wanted a trade and he said "young man, keep your Apple //e, the Mac is just a fad!"
So.. I've been around along time right along with Apple.. and I wish the both of us continued prosperity! Happy BDAY!

p.s. I still own my Apple //e wrench and its on my kechain.. i.e. the wrench to lock down cards on the ol machines!

I remember visiting the first London Apple Store in Moorgate back in the early 1980s. I was then using a DEC Rainbow with a CPS 86/80 OS, colour monitor, digitizing pad for Autocad , Lotus 123 and WP. The early Apple II with low def B&W screen and primitive graphics looked like a toy, but the mouse looked promising.

High school students? Come on! Steve Jobs was 21 in 1976 and Woz was 26.

Unless Steve & Steve were in their twenties and still in high school, I believe you meant "two college students" in the introductory sentence.

High School students? Apple may be a fairytale story, but it's not that bad. That is unless, of course, Jobs and Wozniak were, respectively, 21 and 26 year old high school students with jobs at Atari and HP.

Funny thing. I just (yesterday) picked up a IIc from a friend. We had IIe's and II+'s at my elementary school and I remember seeing the IIc--with an LCD screen OMG!!!--at an educational trade show when I was in the 4th or 5th grade. Once I wrote a really simple BASIC program to make the whole screen flash and ran it on the dozen computer in our lab.

I had one of those LCD screens for my //c...
Yes, I was a geek back then, too.

I got my first Apple in 1984. It was an Apple //c.
Back then, I used a 300 baud modem to connect to the original AppleLink (I think that's what it was called), which became America Online. The early AOL was Apple only and I was MariaL1 (the first Maria L). Back in those days, there were more Apple computers than any other.
In 1989, when I bought my first Mac, I told my husband that the $8,000 (!) computer system would "change my life." I was right. I taught myself everything I could about my new computer. A year later, I left a job I hated as a financial analyst to become a freelance computer trainer and writer.
I haven't looked back.
Happy Birthday, Apple! And thanks!

In 1989 I was asked to take a photo of the garage of the very modest house Apple was started in. It seemed awkward to do so without first asking the current owner for permission. He kindly asked if I'd like to see it from the inside and I eagerly agreed. While in the house I was also shown one of the bedrooms that featured several early Apple posters. Then it dawned on me...I was being given a tour by Steve Jobs' dad. This lead to an expanded conversation of the very early days. A nice man. I've had the occcasion to also photograph Steve on several occasions but I never considered telling him I'd been in his bedroom.
