TUAW predicts WWDC '08

With WWDC right around the corner, the bloggers at TUAW have compiled a list of predictions for WWDC '08. While we are not sure what will be released, this is a fun list of what we think might be coming, or things that we really want. Be sure to voice your predictions in the comments, and by taking part in our poll.

Steve Sande
I'll take ".Mac rebranding and expansion to iPhone and Windows, 3G iPhone, iTablet, and Mac nano" for $500, Alex!

Robert Palmer
I think we might find out what the next "big cat name" will be for 10.6. [We're pretty sure we know what that'll be.] I think we'll start to see a development toolset for bringing all of Apple's devices together. Imagine a novice user being able to create a small app that runs on the iPhone, as a Dashboard widget, and maybe as a widget for some future Apple TV in one build. To do that, we need the next generation of Apple development tools. That's what we might begin to see at WWDC.

Joshua Ellis
Flash on the iPhone, 3G, and I'd really love to see that iTablet and Mac nano action.

Mike Schramm
We'll see 3G and new .Mac for sure, and I think we'll see some more official iPhone apps from Apple, in addition to everything else from the App Store. I don't think we'll see any other new hardware (a redesigned MBP may be in the cards, but an iTablet or Mac Nano is a no), but I do think we'll see a years-off glimpse of 10.6 -- with Leopard out and updated, Apple needs to start up some more OS hype.

Chris Ullrich
iPhone 2.0 with 3G and video shooting capability. .Mac rebranding with new features similar to Google Apps and accessability to Windows users. iPhone 2.0 applications and some details on the next version of OSX code named "insert name of big cat here."

Cory Bohon
We'll definitely see some .Mac rebranding going on, some new "mystery hardware," and a sneak peak at what's beneath the hood of Mac OS X 10.6. I don't think we will see the iPhone 2.0 firmware hitting the streets just yet, and I think that Mac OS X 10.5.4 might be right around the corner.

Brett Terpstra
Enterprise solutions on the iPhone (I know, generic prediction). MBP update. Announcement that Apple was actually serious about using me.com, followed by a Keynote presentation with focus group study data indicating that it's actually a really, really good name.

Michael Rose
Can't wait for the over-the-air sync of .Mac/MobileMe, and I don't even own an iPhone! I think we'll get a launch date for the App Store and an on-sale date for iPhone 2, but neither of them will be during the show. I think we'll see a 10.6 seed preview and the Mac Nano... and maybe, just maybe, the iPhoneBig.

Scott McNulty
I'm with the crowd on the .Mac rebranding, and the 10.6 dog and pony show. We'll see (I think) iPhone 2.0, but what I'm really hoping for is a redesigned MacBook Pro. I'm about ready to replace mine, and I'd love to get one with a keyboard like the MacBook's.

Now, it's your turn.

Every Apple computer has a pro counter part apart from the Mac mini. Anyone nostalgic enough to warrant Apple to release the Mac mini Pro? The tiny, professional desktop computer that packs the punch of a Mac Pro?

You couldn't pack the power of a MacPro with their uber-expensive Xeons cpus.

But yes, a cube-sized mac mini with a user-replaceable standed PCI-E graphics card would be delightfull.

I'm going out on a limb here and saying that there will be an announcement of a future osx for PC. I'm sure there will be about 400,000,000 people telling me i'm stupid, however i think it makes sense. The two bridges...one Mac, one PC. Also, with the rising popularity of OSX86 as an alternative to a mac purchase, I believe that apple will attemp to profit atleast from the software side of it. Pystar won't be the last to offer such solutions as well. The days off OSX on only Apple hardware are coming to an end, whether Apple likes it or not. That said, no one will ever do apple better than apple. They will still continue to build beautiful machines that run better than thier PC counterparts, however in the future it will be about options to the consumer. With apples increased consumer electronics offerings, I believe it needs it's computer sales less and less. I see Apple making OSX more of a multi platform OS.( As in OSX iPhone, OSX Mac, OSX PC, OSX TV..ect)With the low satisfaction with Vista, I believe that apple will see this as a great time to grap some market share. What if all those people "who switched back to XP" had the ability to switch to OSX instead?
I'm not a tech guru, or some wall street analyst, just a guy who reads a lot of blogs, who has a hunch. Keep in mind though...I am also a guy who picked the Buffalo Bills every year in the super bowl...so, that should tell you something. lol
It was a nice thought i suppose=)

I don't know what you've been taking but this:

"The days off OSX on only Apple hardware are coming to an end, whether Apple likes it or not."

Is like saying, the days of Windows being a Microsoft product are coming to an end, whether Microsoft likes it or not.

Now, whether you're a PC user or whether you illegally install OS X on your computer, the fact remains that OS X will only remain on Apple hardware. Those of us that are Mac users wouldn't want it any other way simply because we buy in to the Mac as a whole, not just for its operating system. Apple uses select hardware to keep hardware-related issues to a minimum. You will do well to remember that.

I don't think Apple would ever go into a system where the drivers necessary to run the OS take up more space than the actual OS.

Been a while since you've paid attention to "Jeopardy!", eh Mr. Sande?

I'm hoping for an aluminum MacBook with a multi-touch trackpad. I'm a student, and can't afford a MBP, but I don't want to wait too long. However, patience is the name of the game with Apple.

Just bought a Macbook Pro (my first Mac) on May 10th, if they come out with new Pros on the WWDC, would I be able to exchange it for the new one? or am I SoL?

No-one has even mentioned the iPods. The whole game for Apple is to move into the portable all-round devices arena, so while the iPhone covers that, until the Mac-tablet-nano comes into the picture, the Touch range will surely be improved on. If nothing else, I'd expect that the iPhone 2 will have a top capacity of 32Gb, with the usual doubling of the top end Touch to 64Gb.

Also, we're about due for an all-over brushed aluminium look, aren't we? They did it with the iPod mini, then the Nano (which admittedly went half-way back with it's current model), but I expect them to lose the shiny scratch-magnet back surface as well!

iPhone 3G and iPhone 2.0 seems most imminent. And knowing Apple, Mac OS X 10.6 might be announced.
