Will Apple buy mobile ad company Quattro Wireless? UPDATE: Yes.

According to Kara Swisher at AllThingsD, Apple may announce the purchase of Quattro for the relative bargain price of $275 million. I say bargain because, as Kara points out, Google paid three times that for AdMob, another mobile ad company. So what? This bit of news, when taken with the ad patent filed by Apple, could suggest they are going to implement some sort of ad system on something. But what? AdMob could be used on Android-powered devices...

How about ads on a tablet device? Ads could help lower the cost of the mythical tablet, especially when those ads are sold by, say, content creators like a newspaper or four. I realize those are a lot of threads to pull together, but all the speculation seems to be swirling around this tablet, the cost and the content that'll go inside. Traditionally cost has been the Achilles' heel for an Apple product, but with ad-supported price breaks you could theoretically lower the cost of the product to the consumer while keeping some margins.

Then again, Apple may simply be planning to integrate Quattro into the developers' toolkits, and provide them with an in-house solution for ad-supported apps. Or maybe they are going to sell an ad-supported OS X for Dell machines. Who knows? As I write this neither company had any comment on the sale or announcement.

UPDATE: Yeah, Apple bought Quattro after all. Let the advertising begin!

This acquisition is exciting for the mobile space and here at Mobclix we see it as continued market validation. It was a natural and expected move on the part of Apple, with 80% of app downloads being free they wanted to get in on all the money being made in the ad-driven app space. 2010 will be a banner year for mobile. With iPhone downloads hitting 3B and the Nexus One release today, it’s the beginning of what will be the first truly cross platform year for apps. It’s time for all media companies’ to sit up and take notice of the space if they want long term success.

We are using Quattro in our app for monetizing, which has been amazing until now. Since Jan 1st, 2010 our fill rates dropped below 50% (before jan 1st 2010 they were 80%-100%) Our CPM dropped dramatically as well. Are many developers experiencing this? Is it the holiday campaigns ending? What gives.

Apple would not sully a piece of hardware with annoying ads since it would cripple the user experience.

Maybe Apple figured out a way to adapt the iTunes Genius to a web search engine, and they bought Quatrro because they are first making the search service for Web Kit browsers - Safari and Chrome - integrating Quattro's technology right into Web Kit. That would kick Google in the pants. And deservedly so, since the Google search engine gets more and more pitiful as the days go by.

If they can give me a downloaded episode of Lost free, provided I watch minimal adverts (customised to my interests, location, & needs), that's fine.

If I have to see ads all the time just to use my device.... not good.

"Apple may simply be planning to integrate Quattro into the developers' toolkits, and provide them with an in-house solution for ad-supported apps."

This is what I would suspect is going on... If Apple can convice developers to use their ad option they may see more free app downloads, but they will still be making money from the apps. I don't know how companies like Quattro or AdMob split their revenue, but Apple may push developers to use their brand because it could be easily implimented into the SDK and profit-sharing system already in place...

Quite right. There is no "add" in a product. Can someone tell Apple this?
