Apple 'experts' coming to a store near you

Along with the "Geniuses" and "Creatives" currently available at the Apple Store, there's a new type of employee that'll be wandering the store floors. Apple "Experts" are set to debut in about two weeks at retail locations around the country. The men and women selected as Experts will move up into what seems like a more elite sales position, with their jobs being not only to educate the incoming public about everything Macs can do for them, but to "create the next generation of Apple fans" -- in other words, sell as many computers as they can.

2010 should be an interesting year for Apple retail -- not only do they have that prototype store planned in Palo Alto, but they're working on growing some of their locations as well and trying to build up more "flagship" stores like New York's Fifth Avenue store and Chicago's Michigan Avenue location. Sounds good to us; visiting the Apple Store is always interesting, and if they're planning to mix it up even more, we look forward to the surprises.

Charli, your experience may have been good. I beg to differ about best buy and apple. I have had similar experiences at best buy and the apple store. Both apple and best buy employees didn't have simple answers about upgrades. Example given. When I upgraded to snow leopard, no apple employee could give me accurate information on applications that would stop working.

Sure enough when I upgraded to snow leopard application either stopped completely or asked for money (upgrade) to keep them. As far as honesty both apple and bestbuy employees gave bogus answers when it was obvious they didn't know. Actually to be honest the best buy guy after a while just said he wasn't sure and I can always bring it back if it didn't work out. Not so with apple. The person pushed the product and said yeah..no worries.. it'll run.. etc..

hmmm.. commissions maybe.. apple does measure employee performance. How else do folks get promoted?

@drewberto. in some cases the extra speed doesn't hurt. but you are correct that more often than not it is just added cost. but not even all sales people know which is the case. that's why the 'experts'
as for the honesty comment. I do a LOT of mac buying cause the company I work for uses all macs (video and music production for commercials, industrials etc) and I freelance in the same fields using macs. and at the apple stores they are that honest. to me, to the people I overhear when I am in the stores. continued sales depends on customer satisfaction so setting up folks with the right machine is important. and i'm pretty sure they don't get commissions so they don't push for the most expensive, nag about not getting apple care, mobile me etc.
on the other hand, at places like Best Buy they either do get commissions or they get rated on what they sell cause they nag like crazy. i've had them push that bogus 'system optimization' service on me, push their service plan on me. and they are stooooppid. I've had pimply kids admit that they actually work in car stereos but the computer guy had to go to his dinner break. I've had guys claim to be 'the mac expert' and I fooled him with fake spec ratings like the ZQ4 rating on the display (it's a 9.3 by the way, which is 'awesome') and yes the new imac uses the new 2000 speed D7 ram. and apparently 64 bit means that the system can be installed with up to 64 gigs of ram (32 means only up to 32 gigs and so on). uh not exactly.

You know, I turned down a job at Apple in NJ to take an apartment and job as a full time DJ in NYC... And then I saw your thumbnail and I thought "Experts" got to wear cardigans. Your thumbnail was misleading and I thought I made a bad decision.

THANKS A LOT TUAW.

It would be Really Nice to have some talent on OS X Server, with the Mini Server as a new product...

many stores do have the talent but it's not in the way that most expect. I was asked by my boss to look into getting the new mini to host the companies upcoming web site. having dealt with one of the local stores already I went in and just asked for the business sales guy, figuring since that was an item a little more corporate oriented he would have a clue.

but given that that guy is often only one person and can't be there all the time, yeah some more talent at least on the basics wouldn't hurt.

pity you didn't do the research and reading for yourself and just reposted AI's erroneous info.

as the job announcement says, this is a SALES position. nothing to do with the Geniuses or the trainers.

SALES. So it is more likely a roaming sales person with the vast product knowledge to help out folks when they get questions like "if I'm running Logic is it better to have a 2.8 or is a 2.66 okay. How much ram should I really have. and what about using an external hard drive, will it freeze up." which many specialists have no real clue about.
