NY teen arrested after leaving threatening note on screen in Apple Store

A teen in New York has been arrested for leaving a threatening note on the screen of a computer at an Apple Store. The 17-year-old boy was joking around with friends when he typed a note on screen promising "a bloody death" to anyone working in the store via a "bomb loaded with C4, strapped to my chest." The note was then signed with the name of one of his friends' fathers. He claims he typed it just to be funny, and then forgot to delete it when he left, but the District Attorney in Staten Island says it's no joke -- the kid faces up to seven years in prison.

I can't help but think they'll let him off the hook eventually. Sure, it was a stupid (really stupid) thing to do, and they should come up with a punishment that teaches the kid a lesson, but time in prison labeled as a terrorist seems a little much for showing off to friends in an Apple Store. Maybe they can have him do some in-store lip synching performances as a community service.

What's wrong with you people? This kid doesn't deserve anything more than being taken to the police station, sat in a room for maybe an hour, and told that what he did was in no way funny.

Community service, prison, wtf is wrong with any of you? Grow up.

Exactly! The kid would be crapping his pants from that ordeal alone.

Although this was such a stupid act for a spoiled American 17 year old (who now-a-days are about as intelligent as an 8-year old from other non US countries) I totally feel sorry for the parents of this "child". When I say spoiled, I mean not by his parents, but the fact he doesn't know how great of a care-free life he has and he does not know the importance or have concern for a human life when making idiotic message like that.
And before you judge me... this is comment is coming from a 20 year enlisted US military member.

The bunch of posters talking about the fear of Terrorist attack has us over-reacting... Please it has nothing to do with terrorism. I'm all for instituting "Caning" Singapore style. Community Service is only good if we can be sure that he will be cleaning toilets and knee deep in shit. That is the only way that this kid will remember why he is doing this.

He probably wasn't laughing much while he was being booked into Central Booking; at least it wasn't Rikers Island. Nor do I think his parents or friend's father will be laughing along, either.

I agree with Tom. What most of you are not fully understanding is the gravity of the the "Joke". This prank/joke whatever has very serious potential consequences aside from what the message said regardless of what didn't happen. This may have diverted serious emergency care or investigative time on some other situation that had real impact. He should be held accountable for his actions within the rule of law. I don't care what age he is or if it was a prank or not. He did it and now he should be held accountable. Send him to prison (if that's what the law states) for a very brief period of time to scare the shit out of him and I guarantee he will never make "this stupid" mistake again.

What's even more disturbing are the number of people on this blog that find it acceptable behavior to pull a prank like this. It's completely unacceptable! I hope you never have children. It's why kids do stuff like this in the first place... bad parenting.

Haha, wonderful justice system. Why is everyone getting so butthurt about a joke? I mean, sure, it was quite stupid, but arresting him, and threatening years of jail-time? That's just stupid. Focus a little more time on actual criminals maybe, not moronic teenagers.

Seriously, they must have a lot of free time on their hands.

Heh, you Americans. You live in so much fear. It's the core of your conservative politics.

And yet you're more likely to be struck by lightning than a terrorist attack.

Easiest, fairest way to settle it.

Let a person who had a relative die in the WTC attack be drawn at random, and get one punch to the kid's face... video to be posted on YouTube with Google Ad revenue to the NY fireman's memorial fund.
