Rumor: MobileMe may soon be free

MacDailyNews reports an unconfirmed rumor that Apple may soon make MobileMe's services free to all users. MobileMe currently costs US$99 per year for a subscription; it provides cloud storage, email, photo galleries, and syncing of contacts/calendars/bookmarks across Macs, PCs, iPhones, and iPads (not to mention Find My iPhone). While the service has many useful features (some implemented better than others: I'm aiming my stinkeye at you, iDisk), many have balked at the price tag.

Similar storage and email services from competitors like Google and Microsoft come either free of charge or at reduced cost compared to MobileMe; even MobileMe's distant ancestor, iTools, was a free offering back in the day. Of course, MobileMe delivers more iPhone & Mac-friendly syncing than Google does, but at $99 per year, it's a fair bet that few people are taking advantage of everything MobileMe has to offer.

MacDailyNews' source says MobileMe will become free of charge "sooner than later... depends on certain facilities going operational." This almost certainly refers to Apple's new server farm in North Carolina. Aerial footage of Apple's server farm, released in February, showed that the complex's buildings were either mostly or entirely constructed, so the facility may be ready to go online at any time.

I hope this rumor is true, especially the "sooner than later" part -- my MobileMe subscription is due for renewal at the end of this month.

I don't care that it looks almost complete on the exterior -- how does it look inside? It's going to have to be loaded with computers, miles of cable, etc. How long will that take? I like mobile.me, I've been using it for several years.

That would be wonderful to start using again as I have to use Yahoo! calendars for OTA sync, Gmail, and sync my contacts directly with my iPhone since both Gmail and Yahoo can't handle extra fields. If I could even get just the calendars and contacts sync I'd be happy to switch back.

Dropbox suits my needs right now. I've tried to find a solution to use the extra space from Gmail, but nothing seems to work.

Make it free and let us use "mac.com" again. Me.com is stupid.

Actually, I believe that new facility with the aerial footage is a new CAT building. It was on the local news here in NC

If this in fact turns out to be true I would definitely become a dedicated user. I'm currently running the trial, but being a Windows user, the services can sometimes feel a bit lacking. I really like the contact, calendar, and mail syncing which is one of the main reasons I liked MobileMe so much but I just wasn't willing to spend $99 for it.

I wouldn't mind spending a similar amount to remove adds, etc., if the service does go free. I enjoy using google sync but a free MobileMe would replace anything google could offer for me.

Well, I guess now that Apple stock is well over $200/ share, the skies are blue, and the birds are chirping, it's once again time to make what Steve Jobs originally PROMISED to all Mac users in the late 90's to be free FOREVER- ie dotMac services, now evolved as MobileMe- once again free to all Apple customers, despite Apple reneging on that promise only a few years later after realizing they couldn't afford to sustain the costs...

Don't get me wrong- dotMac has been great. But, it just seems like if Apple's going to make it free to the rest of the world that they ought to give something back to those of us who've supported the platform from the get go in order to sustain it to where it is today...

Years ago, it was limited but free. It was a fantastic bragging point to PC users, clearly delineating an Apple attitude of gratitude.

Then, a few years after that (dunno - 3 or 4? Can't remember), it cost real $$ but with a bunch of added capabilities. Suddenly, the bragging point was pointless. However, it all still "just worked."

Then, more recently in the last 3 years, many $100 payments later, especially during the iPhone's debut, it no longer "just worked" and data was lost, and my Address Book was completely mangled and horribly corrupted, I began to lose faith. And clearly I was paying way too much for way too little. But they mostly fixed most of the really horrible issues recently. So, reluctantly, with gritted teeth and a scowl, I paid the $100 just last month...

And now, back to FREE. Well, if Apple throws something my way in compensation, I won't stop 'em. And if not, oh well, my world won't end and life goes on. But in this economy, I think they'd be crazy not to "show some love..."

Good points... I had an incident a few years back where all my "cloud" dotMac data got erased too- without any warning or reason. I opened a ticket with Apple, and they were like, "oh that sucks for you," and did nothing... :sigh: Luckily, since I sync multiple Macs, I just reset the dotMac data and pushed a copy from one of my Macs that hadn't sync'd and lost all the data yet. And, not to mention when dotMac changed to MobileMe, web mail became 150% completely unusable... We've supported the dotMac -> MobileMe platform to make it what it is today...
