Apple looking to hire iBookstore marketing manager

Apple has posted a new job listing looking for a marketing manager specifically for the iBookstore. The listing seeks an experienced business marketer "to drive awareness and sales of iBooks through co-marketing programs with publishers and authors, strategic partnerships, and via online and direct marketing tactics." It seems like a lot of the position will be self-driven, as whoever's chosen will be asked to come up with some interesting schemes to push iBook sales, both with publishers, and even across the other divisions of iTunes (buy an iBook, get an iTunes download free?). But the bottom line is of course sales -- Apple wants someone to push iBooks, specifically in the US.
More power to them, we say. Apple has some staunch competitors in terms of book sales -- while I'd consider the iPad a much better e-reader than Amazon's Kindle, I've actually purchased more books from the Kindle store just because I feel it's a better experience. Maybe with someone in charge of getting readers into the iBookstore, we'll see more reasons to stick with Apple's digital editions rather than going elsewhere.

This shows they are serious about growing this market on their devices.

August 31 2010 at 7:26 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyUntil Apple decides to allow multiple devices to share a single ebook (Kindle allows up to five devices), I'll stick with the Kindle store. The iPad is a better reader than the Kindle, no argument -- so we'll use it to read our Kindle content.
for iBooks to work we need books in more languages! C'mon Apple give us more languages

Both readers (iBooks and Kindle App) have it's features, but lately I've been enjoying Amazon's.
The problem Apple has with the iBook store is there simply are not enough books. Books are not like music- the latest and new releases (which iBooks has the most of) are not the bread and butter of the book world. Books from five years or ten years ago that have become "classics" in their own right are needed on the iBook store. Fiver year old music- no one cares about!
I searched for ten books that I wanted to buy on iBooks. NONE of them were available. All but three are available as a Kindle edition.
Five years? I care about 300 year old music...
;)
All they have to do do drive my sales is get more books into the store, and make the store itself not suck quite so much for searching.
I always look in iBooks first. Then, when they inevitably don't have what I'm looking for, I go buy it from Amazon, crack the DRM, convert to ePub, and put it into iBooks on the iPad.
(I know you can use the Kindle app on the iPad, but the whole thing of using a different reader depending on where you bought the book, and having your library split between readers, is not going to fly. And iBooks is a way better reader.)
You know what I would love to see, not just on the iBooks store but with digital books in general, is to get the digital version when you buy a physical one. Like you see on some DVDs.

With a movie, you often watch it multiple times and because the disc is so small it's not a hassle to keep a lot of them. On the other hand, people often read books only once so a bundle would frequently result in (for example) you and me splitting the cost - you keeping the ebook since you're short on space and me keeping the hardcover since I'll only read it once and then I can pass it on to my family.
Again, I love the idea I just don't see how it's in the publishers best interest.
Top of my list is integrating more functionality on the bookshelf. As it stands, there's no way to mark books as read or unread, and no way to keep track of books you've read / owned in the past. I'd love to see some sort of integration with Shelfari.com or Delicious Library for a third shelf (possibly 'hardcopy owned'?) just so I can keep track of things all in one place. Apple would benefit too, as they'd have a much more complete catalogue of purchases to work with for their 'Genius' recommendations engine.
Of course, top of anyone's list would be the ability to buy digital versions of books they already own for a reduced price, but I doubt the publishers would ever let that happen, even if they were able to make more money from it.
There are a few reasons I buy ebooks from Amazon vs the IBookstore.
One is I can browse the Amazon store from my desktop so if I see a good book recommendation I can quickly see if it's available no matter what computer/device I am using. Secondly, the iBook selection sucks they have no where near the amount of books Amazon has, my searches have come up empty so often I've stopped checking. Apple build a desktop ibook store and improve their selection if they want to compete with Amazon. I hope they do because I prefer the iBook reading experience to the Kindle app.
"Secondly, the iBook selection sucks (...)"
I don't think Apple is entirely to blame on this account, the publishers are. But Apple could make a few phone calls, I guess. I expected a rich selection but I only bought 51 books that interest me and that's about all I will buy unless this new manager upgrades the iBooks Store.
The store has a lot of books but they are completely hidden. Currently you have to search for most books by the exact name of the title in full. For example if a books title is, "Green Blue and Red", you won't be able to find it by just searching Green.
Also, the store is lacking many sections in the GUI that exist such as poetry and short stories. So if you submit a book as such you are SOL.
