What is it like to work at Apple?

Ever wondered what it's like to work at Apple? AOL Jobs spoke to Joe Moreno, a software engineer who worked at Apple from 1998 to 2007. Joe touched numerous products and projects, notably WebObjects and the Apple Online Store (No, he wasn't the guy who puts the yellow sticky note up when new products arrive). His accounts of Apple make it sound like working there is almost as innovative as their products. From HR to communications, there's a lot other companies could learn from.

As TUAW is a blog about Apple, I found the following quite interesting:
"As an Apple employee, you definitely get the feeling that blogging about the company is frowned upon. It goes to the extent that, if you have a personal blog about an unrelated topic, you don't even want to mention that you work for Apple."

There are very few company blogs, even with notable exceptions such as Surfin' Safari, their WebKit blog. Still, this is in contrast to Microsoft, where there are numerous blogs by product divisions and personnel. Then again, it's been a long time since Microsoft routinely surprised and delighted their customers and fans, so perhaps Apple is on to something.

The link in the second sentence is clear. However, the "Source" link is useless--it's buried, and I doubt anyone sees it. Which is why having a link in the body of the post is important--and was done here!
Maybe some of the negative reaction is because there weren't many nuggets of information from the article in the blog post. Maybe a few additional items that were of interest to Victor would have helped, and made it feel a little more like a useful piece on its own, instead of just a pointer to an article.

Scratching my head over the comments.

To me it was clear this was mainly an article about another article, with link included. This is a common type of of blog post. I don't see what the problem is, at least not for anyone who's ever read more than a few blogs.

I for one have wondered many, many times about about working at Apple. I like this kind of inside story.

I do agree the "perhaps Apple is on to something" doesn't really follow, but that's such a minor point. Maybe you guys complaining should include links to the brilliant commentary on your own blogs.

Bad article, Victor. Your headline is the title of a story and the body is supposed to deliver. If I picked up a book called "Tractors" and opened it to find a post-it note saying "Go to a bookstore and get a book about tractors" and then read "lots of farmers smoke cigarettes" I would be pissed off. Your confused readers are right and you are wrong.

Let me make sure I understand your line of reasoning. Apple employees don't blog, and make delightful products. MS employees blog and make boring products. Therefore, blogging causes boring products. Please confirm if this is what you are saying.

Its amazing how this a small blip about One guys opinion about working at Apple,Though I've heard much less flattering things from other employees some how still contains some reference to Microsoft.. true or not.

Apple is another Gigantic corporate entity that is a master a public opinion, at least in the little ivory tower of the tech community.

I have my share of Apple products, but I don't for a second believe that working there is any different than Google or Microsoft.

I can't get over the comments to this article. The link to the interview is in the second sentence. It's pretty obvious unless today is your first day on the Internet.

Of course if the link had been made much more obvious there would be a bunch of comments about how insulting that was.

I really don't get all the hate.

Dude, if you think mild, occasionally pissy criticism, justified or not, is hate, you have no idea of what hate is.

Everyone grumbles from time to time.

Unfortunately, there are way too many examples of real hatred in this world!

It's amazing that a blog about Apple products manages to make a blog entry that is completely unintuitive, complete with the author coming along and making a bunch of snarky comments. Great way to reach out to your readers.

Also this is the sort of article that makes me dislike this blog so much. A whole lot of fluff content and few articles that are actually interesting. Time for me to unsubscribe I think.

"complete with the author coming along and making a bunch of snarky comments."

Indeed. I feel like the author is trying to be clever and witty and is just coming off like your typical Internet know-it-all. I appreciate the effort in trying to educate the commenters of this post, but the tone is way off base IMHO.

TUAW, consider trying to grow your readership by encouraging a community. Ridiculing your readership every time they do something silly only serves to make you look bad.

This is an Apple blog! An article about what it's like to work at Apple seems well within the scope of TUAW!

I enjoyed the article and "THE LINK"!
