Apple TV / film product placement down, but still ahead of competition
Maybe it's because I am both a fan and a loyal customer, but I do tend to notice how often Apple products pop up everywhere as the de facto computers on TV and on the big screen. According to a report by AppleInsider, Apple doesn't even pay for that product placement, yet 30 percent of the top movies in 2010 prominently featured Apple products.
This figure is down from 46 percent in 2009 and 50 percent in 2008, but that 30 percent is still higher than any other brand -- even with other computer brands trying to mimic Apple's placement strategy. Back in 2006 we discussed an article at The Washington Post about all the "free" product placement Apple received in TV shows and movies, so we know this has been going on for quite some time.
We've recently talked about the iPad being the star of Modern Family and iPod product placement on The Office, and now CrunchGear has found a video of Apple's Greatest Cinematic Achievements over on Vimeo. At 7:24 long and including everything from 30 Rock, War Games and The Sopranos, it's a fun look at how Apple's products have been placed in film and TV over the years.

just fyi - since 2001, Brandchannel has tracked brands appearing in top movies. The report (source) mentioned this article is from Brandchannel, not AppleInsider.

I've noticed there are those two imitation computers out there, the "Square" and the "Circle," showing up in movies and sitcoms where Apple used to.

Does it only count once per show or per episode? iPhones are on every show I watch on USA and NBC. Heck even CBS too.
If it is accurate what is the next best or higher?
A lot of those examples are really old. I would rather see it in a historical list.
I know in recent times I've seen a lot of ipads on Chuck and I caught a couple on Criminal Minds watching repeats. Not in the background but being used to look at camera footage, flip through crime scene photos etc. right on camera. They had it in a carrying case but it was clearly an ipad. And I'm fairly sure I saw at least one of the agents sporting an iphone 4.
Back just a couple of years ago, tv shows were forced by legal rules to hide logos and couldn't pay or take payment for product placement. Whole companies grew on the need for fake product lines for shows. But then the rules were changed and now it is an open game just like on the movies. So you see shows getting free cars, computers etc. Helps bring down budgets just like on movies.
You mean the examples in the video? Sure, didn't even watch it the first time, it's teribbly done. It should zoom in on the product.
But I agree, Southland, Criminal Minds, Chuck, 30 Rock, Burn Notice, Psych and White Collar all bust out Apple products (and Ford ads in White Collar) every episode.
So I don't think they're really that far down, I want tangible evidence!
That compilation on vimeo just sucked... If they put some titles it would make easier to recognize the movie. And background music...german something new wave techno. It made the watching even worse..

My freshman year, I was rocking the $450 Bargain Gateway special and I thought it was the greatest thing in the world even though it got maybe 2 hours between charges, max.
